A warm sunny afternoon in Haggerston kicked off with plenty of fizz. The blues opened the scoring with a second header from a corner which looped agonisingly under the crossbar. Player Manager Spizz made an early substitution putting veteran Mick Kavanagh on and immediately Michael Reynolds swooped onto a through ball and his no-nonsense shot found the back of the net to put the sides level. Having just secured promotion from the 2nd division of the supporters league, Birmingham were left cursing their luck as Michael Reynolds set up David Thomas with a mouth-watering opportunity and secured the 2nd goal. Mick Kavanagh nearly made it 3-1 as his low drive was inches wide of the sprawling blues keeper. Morgan Bryn came off to take over refereeing duties and the second half was mostly played in the Villa end with the Holte Enders making it Fortress Villa. Will Annison made a heroic run from deep in his own half and nearly produced a goal. Later Villa keeper Pat Cauneen pushed a finely placed shot out and it ricocheted off Caffrey into the net for the equaliser. A final flurry at either end as the game came to an end and a draw was a fair result. Amazing really, seeing as the Villa boys last game together was this same fixture the previous year. The two newest recruits Richard Rooney and Jon Boult deserve a special mention for their skill and effort. On reflection this was a much improved Villa side.

Just for fun Jon Boult (rashly?) suggested a penalty shoot out. Strangely just like the professional world players from both sides showed a reluctance to come forward. Five from each side stepped up. Oh dear...
